13 Fallout 76 Tips for New Players to Avoid Costly Mistakes
If you're just stepping into Appalachia for the first time, Fallout 76 can be both exciting and overwhelming. With nukes, mutations, PvP encounters, and a deep crafting system, there’s a lot to learn. I’ve put together 13 tips I wish I’d known when I started, to help you avoid wasting resources, time, or caps.
1. Don’t Hoard EverythingThe temptation to loot every toaster and clipboard is real, but weight limits are brutal. Prioritize scrap with useful components (adhesive, aluminum, lead, screws) and drop the junk you don’t need. Use your stash wisely and keep it organized.
2. Learn Bulk Crafting EarlyYou can bulk certain junk items at workbenches, reducing their weight and freeing up stash space. This is essential for managing those 1200-pound stash limits, especially if you're stockpiling resources to craft or trade.
3. Watch Your CapsCaps are precious, especially early on. Fast travel costs caps, and vendors have limits on how many caps they'll spend buying your junk. Consider planning your routes to save on travel costs. Some players also choose to buy Fallout 76 Caps online to keep things moving, but always spend wisely.
4. Get a CAMP Plan Before Moving ItYour CAMP is your lifeline. Don’t just slap it down anywhere. Scout an area with a nearby water source, good resources, and safe distance from high-level enemies. Moving your CAMP costs caps, so pick the spot carefully.
5. Repair Kits and Scrap Kits Are Handy, But Don’t Rely on ThemYou can get these through the Atom Shop or events. They’re convenient for quick fixes, but learn to craft and repair with your own resources. That way you’re not stuck if you run out of kits in a tough spot.
6. Join a Team for BonusesPublic teams give you small but meaningful bonuses depending on their goal (XP boost, intelligence, etc.). It’s an easy way to level faster or get more loot without much effort.
7. Don’t Ignore Daily Ops and EventsThese activities offer solid rewards, including XP, plans, and rare items. They’re a great way to gear up or make caps, and many players run them daily.
8. Specialize Your Perk CardsDon’t spread yourself too thin. Figure out if you want to focus on rifles, melee, heavy weapons, or stealth, and pick perks accordingly. Respeccing is possible, but costs time. Plan your build to avoid wasting perk points.
9. Don’t Waste Legendary ModulesLegendary crafting is expensive. Don’t burn through modules on junk weapons. Save them for high-level, desirable items. This is especially true if you’re planning to trade or want to buy Fallout 76 Items from other players—you’ll know what you actually want before spending.
10. Use Vendors and Player VendorsSelling to NPC vendors has its limits, but player vendors can be great for finding deals or offloading items. Prices vary wildly, so shop around and get a sense of the market before buying or selling.
11. Store Ammo in the Ammo Box (If You Have It)If you have Fallout 1st, the ammo box is unlimited for ammo storage. Use it. Ammo weight adds up fast. Even without it, be selective about which ammo types you carry, and break down unwanted ammo to save space.
12. Stay Stocked on Disease Cures and RadawayDiseases are annoying and can mess up combat effectiveness. Craft or carry enough Disease Cure and Radaway so you’re not limping back to your CAMP at half health because of an avoidable debuff.
13. Be Careful With PvPPvP is opt-in, but you can be griefed or baited into fights. Know the rules: you don’t take full damage from another player unless you shoot back. Avoid shooting at others unless you’re ready. And if you want to hunt players, make sure you’re geared and skilled enough to handle it.
